As the trigger is pressed, the tip of the cylinder pushes on the stem and the desired amount of chemical is released. Because this type of trigger sprayer does not use a fluid to operate, there is a wide variety of cleaners that may be used with this design. These cleaners, along with most other types of cleaners, work by attaching to the trigger itself, which allows them to work more effectively even when there is no liquid present to apply to the surface being cleaned.

Another common type of trigger sprayer is the bottle-and-a-pump design. Like the rotary trigger sprayer, the bottle-and-a-pump system works by spraying the chemicals onto the desired surface as the trigger is held down. The difference is that the bottles do not have suction cups and do not require a pump to function. Because of this, the bottles of these cleaners are typically designed for single use and may contain only a few ingredients.

Trigger sprayers can also be powered by electricity or by gas or oil. Some cleaners are powered by electricity, which makes them ideal for cleaning ovens or frying pans that are under pressure. For safety reasons, it is important to make sure that any electric trigger sprayer is put in a location where it cannot come in contact with an electrical outlet. If gas or oil is used, it is important to only use a non-relammable container for storing the cleaner.
